Week 70: Hooklying Breathing with Resistance Band at Ribs

It's December! Which means we're in full throttle holiday mode, so this month's theme is - you guessed it - Surviving the Holidays! Which naturally means lots and lots of breathing drills to keep you sane.

Exercise: Hooklying Breathing with Resistance Band at Ribs

Purpose: To breathe fully and evenly, gaining expansion throughout your entire ribcage

Who It's For: Everyone who loves (or hates) the holidays (and their families).

Why We Love It: Because breathing works, trust us

Procedure:

  1. Wrap a resistance band around your ribcage, especially where it feels the most stiff

  2. Lay on your back with your knees bent up

  3. Tighten the resistance band so you feel resistance against your ribs

  4. Place one hand on your belly and one on your chest, holding the band

  5. Breathe in through your nose and direct the pressure of the air evenly throughout your entire ribcage, feeling your ribs expand 360 degrees into the resistance band

  6. Exhale long and slow out through your mouth, getting every morsel of air out of your lungs

  7. Repeat as prescribed

*Disclaimer: Not all exercises are suitable for everyone, and participation in novel activities may increase the risk of adverse effects such as pain, soreness, or injury. Please consult with your Physician or a local Physical Therapist prior to attempting any exercise you feel uncomfortable performing. If adverse reactions occur, discontinue performance of the exercise and consult your physician or trusted clinician for evaluation.
